Due to the fact that
weather plays a major part with "Welcome Home", the Organizers chose
to move the event into a much better weather period. "Welcome Home"
will still celebrate Vietnam Veterans Day which falls on March 29th of
each year but the change will also allow local communities across this
nation to honor their own Vietnam Veterans on March 29th and also
allow these Veterans to attend "Welcome Home" which has become a
National Annual Event.
 Vietnam
Veterans Day
By Ron "Scooter" Dyer
Back in 2002 some Vietnam Veteran friends were getting together once a week
at a local coffee shop and talk very little about the war. We would talk
about things like, games we played when we got the chance, where we went on
R and R. We would talk a lot of how we miss our friends that we made over
there, wondering if we would ever see them again, than talk of some of our
friends whose names are on the WALL. Times like this is what started me to
thinking about what I could do to make like this happen all over or was
other Vets doing the same thing elsewhere.
In 2004, I decided to make my first trip to the Wall. By faith I guess, it
turned out to be the year they were dedicating the World War II monument,
Since my Dad had served in the Pacific during that war, I went to that
dedication so that him not living long enough to see his monument, might see
it through my eyes. The look on those veterans faces will stay with me
forever. After that it was time to go to the Wall and be with my brothers.
This got me thinking more of what could I do.
That same year I went to a Veterans Day program and while standing there
with five other Nam vets, the Vietnam War was never mentioned. By days end,
I told one of my friends I was going to start a day just for us. While time
went by I had talked with others about this and the fire was getting
stronger. Than in 2007 I met Dann Dunham and told him what I would like to
do and he told me to come back in 30 days to let him know if I still wanted
to do this. When I went back, I told him it was burning at me even more.
That's when the two of us started on the journey that brought about Vietnam
Veterans Day. Click Here
